Implementation of an AI strategy

In these exciting times, the municipal company's top priority is to provide the best service for the region and its people. To achieve this goal, the evm group wants to rely on artificial intelligence (AI). The energy supplier has laid the foundations for this in an AI strategy project with adesso, which focused not on technology but on people.

The evm group is at the beginning of a promising transformation. By developing and implementing an AI strategy, the energy and service company has laid the foundation for positioning itself as a pioneer in digital energy supply.

During implementation, the evm group benefited from adesso's experience. The IT service provider has many years of experience in implementing data science and AI projects and has built up extensive practical expertise in the process. This is precisely what helped the evm group: although it was clear that the company wanted to use AI to make its employees' day-to-day work easier, it was not sure what it would take to successfully achieve this goal. Where do you start and what do you need to pay attention to?

In the project, the partners therefore used adesso's established AI strategy framework and addressed four fields of action:

• AI drivers: A clear vision and precise use cases are necessary to recognise the added value of AI for companies and to make this visible internally.
• AI enablement: This includes all the resources and technologies needed to successfully implement AI initiatives.
• AI operationalisation: The crucial step in transferring projects from proof of concept (PoC) to productive use.
• AI governance: The establishment of processes and guidelines that ensure the secure and efficient use of AI.

The evm group and adesso formed a project team for the project that was designed to reach all employees. This was because those in charge recognised early on that the use of AI would initiate a cultural change within the company. A central point of the AI strategy is therefore to focus on people – both customers and employees. To get them on board, the evm group created discussion formats such as the ‘AI Café’. Here, questions were answered, fears were allayed and opportunities were highlighted.

In just a few months, the evm group developed an AI strategy that optimally prepared the entire organisation for the use of artificial intelligence. The foundations were laid for launching use cases and taking the company to the next level with AI. In addition, the municipal company managed to get the workforce excited about AI.

The best example of this is the ‘Anschreiben-Checker’. This AI-based web app supports employees in formulating customer letters. It is possible to give the web app an already created customer letter or key data for a new letter. Based on the Large Language Model (LLM) GPT-4o, AI then generates an optimised letter that meets the desired company specifications. This saves employees time and immediately demonstrates the advantage of using AI.
