adesso and DHB set digital standard for handball

adesso and the German Handball Federation (Deutscher Handballbund, DHB) have reached an important milestone in the realignment of the DHB’s online presence. Just in time for the Handball World Cup 2025, which started on 14 January, the jointly developed new website dhb.de went online. Since then, it has inspired fans, players and officials alike. The two partners are thus finalising a crucial sub-project on the way to implementing the DHB’s new platform strategy. This is to be completed by the 2027 Men’s Handball World Championship in Germany.

Service and added value for all handball enthusiasts

The modern, user-friendly platform combines design, functionality, and technology. It sets new standards for the digital presentation of handball.

It offers a clear structure in which all relevant content is available at a glance. Information on national teams, news, services, and other offers is presented in such a way that people interested in handball can easily find and use it.

The new website brings fans a good deal closer to the players of the national teams: individual profile pages with customised features allow them to get to know their favourite players even better and find out about their performances.

The integrated event calendar brings together events, matches, and offers in conjunction with the match data platform handball.net. It can be conveniently filtered by category and time period. The calendar provides direct access to match information at handball.net and to ticket options via the online ticket shop of the DHB or other relevant ticket portals.

A future-proof basis

The website is based on the open source content management system Drupal 10 and enables a responsive design that works perfectly on all end devices. With the successful migration of around 65,000 items of content from the previous system and the seamless integration of the handball.net API, adesso and the DHB have created a robust foundation for further developments. The platform also offers a powerful media library and automated quality controls that make everyday editorial work much easier.

With the revised website, the DHB is sending out a clear signal in favour of innovation. “Our new website is more than just a modern internet presence. Together with adesso, we succeeded in creating a future-proof basic architecture for the various handball portals within six months,” says Thomas Zimmermann, Director of Marketing and Communications at the German Handball Federation. “The new dhb.de is part of our strategy to make handball even more visible and tangible digitally. With this platform, we are putting the people who make up our sport at the centre, inspiring and informing.”

Matthias Lahr, Head of Digital Marketing at the DHB, explains: “We have placed a great deal of emphasis on ensuring that the website is not only an efficient and flexible tool for fans, but also for our editorial teams. By using Drupal 10, content can be edited directly in the web browser. Media disruptions are now a thing of the past. The platform also offers everything we need to optimise the display of dynamic content and data.”

Maurice Sonneveld, Head of the Competence Centre Sports at adesso and project manager for the DHB, is delighted with the partnership and the joint results: “The cooperation with the German Handball Federation is characterised by a clear vision and great commitment. With the strategic development of the platform strategy, we have translated these ambitions into concrete fields of action and measures, and created the first visible results with the go-live of the new DHB website. The DHB has shown the courage to break new ground and consistently focus on forward-looking technologies. With this project, we are showing together how we can digitise sport more and make it accessible to a broad target group.”
