One space for health data: adesso and sphin-X e.V. strengthen Germany as a research location

Using data across sectors promises enormous potential for research and improving patient care in the healthcare sector. At the heart of this effort lies the development of a secure, shared data space – a technology that the IT service provider adesso is already exploring extensively through initiatives like HealthTrack-X.

As a founding member of the sphin-X e.V. association, which was founded on 12 November 2024, adesso is reaffirming its commitment to data spaces aimed at enhancing Germany’s position as a hub for research and development. sphin-X e.V. formalises sphin-X, an initiative of the Federation of German Industries (BDI e.V.), and will serve as a steering committee to coordinate the efforts of the current 24 members of the association in future. At the founding meeting, member companies, associations, and organisations from the healthcare industry elected the inaugural board of sphin-X e.V., which includes Christian Wollny, Head of the Competence Center for Data Spaces at adesso.

The vision: one data space for the healthcare sector

sphin-X originally emerged from the BDI initiative “Gesundheit digital”. Under the motto “One Data Space for Health”, more than 50 organisations from the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries have united with the shared goal of establishing a data space to enable cross-thematic collaboration. The aim of the initiative and the association now founded is in particular to promote the use of data for the common good across all sectors. This will be achieved while ensuring compliance with regulatory data protection requirements and preserving the full data sovereignty of all parties involved. As a provider of data space technology, adesso is already successfully implementing various data spaces across multiple projects. adesso brings this experience and expertise to sphin-X e.V. in a profitable way.

Booster for research

A shared data space can speed up the planning and implementation of clinical trials enormously. Clinical datasets could be made available to researchers via a collaborative data space in compliance with interoperability and standards. Effective patient matching is one possibility, along with standardized consent management that enables the automated transfer of health data from various sources between healthcare providers. A shared data space also promises many advantages for other areas of application in the healthcare sector, such as supply chain management and product & lifecycle management, for example, in order to increase security of supply.

“sphin-X delivers crucial momentum for the healthcare industry and Germany. The establishment of the association now sets the stage for concrete project work,” says Christian Wollny. “A common data space in the healthcare sector will instantly increase the attractiveness of Germany as a business location. Both healthcare providers and patients will benefit from the resulting boost in digitalisation and better healthcare.”

We bring the necessary expertise from research and customer projects to collaboratively develop an innovative data space with our partners that meets all stakeholder requirements.”
