Marked expansion in Q1 2023 – adesso opens office in Ulm

IT service provider adesso has already opened its third new office in Germany this year – following the two branches in Siegen and Kiel. The new Ulm office will close a supply gap in southern Germany and extend the adesso axis of Munich-Augsburg-Nuremberg to the Baden-Württemberg state border. adesso will be occupying three floors of the office tower at Magirus-Deutz-Straße 17 in Ulm. With over 7,500 employees (FTEs) across Europe, the adesso Group is on a steep growth trajectory and is aiming for revenue of around one billion euros this year for the first time in its almost 26-year history.

Ulm is another city that meets the criteria adesso traditionally looks for in an office location. Proximity to a university, a strong regional economy and existing customer contacts in the area are particularly important to the IT service provider. Ulm is the largest city in the Tübingen administrative district and the Danube-Iller region, and is home to a renowned university focusing on science, engineering, economics and IT, and a university of applied sciences with an acclaimed automotive centre and state-of-the-art industrial service robotics area.

adesso has had a particularly close relationship for many years with Prof. Dr Manfred Reichert, director of the Institute of Databases and Information Systems in the Faculty of Engineering, Computer Science and Psychology at the University of Ulm. Reichert is a member of the adesso Academic Committee, which promotes the transfer of knowledge between academia and practical application. The new Site Manager at adesso Ulm, Kolja Tönges, will therefore be working particularly closely with Manfred Reichert when it comes to dialogue between the company and the university at regional level. This cooperation was the focal point of the professor’s first visit to the new Ulm office in March.

The regional economy around Ulm is heavily characterised by small and medium-sized enterprises, with innovative supplier companies and service providers to the manufacturing and electronics industries based there. A high-tech company and global technology leader – and adesso’s largest client at the moment – is located to the north of Ulm, in the Ostalbkreis area. Two hundred adesso employees have been deployed there for almost the past two years, supporting the company through its digital transformation.

For Site Manager Kolja Tönges, head of the Microsoft segment at adesso, the new office is an opportunity to gain a foothold in the attractive Allgäu economic region, characterised by SMEs. “There are a great many attractive businesses with digitalisation needs located in the southern tri-border area down to Lake Constance that we could focus the adesso portfolio on. Our Manufacturing Industry and Automotive offering relating to Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things, data and analytics and AI will be of particular interest to this segment. We have no doubt about that,” he said.

Thirty adesso employees started working at the new Ulm office in March, with the headcount planned to increase to around 80 by the end of the year. According to Tönges, some 300 adesso staff already live in that area. They could work at their local office in Ulm rather than commuting to adesso’s sites in Stuttgart or Reutlingen in the future.

For Prof. Reichert from the University of Ulm, who is also Chairman of the Board of the Transfer Center for Digitization, Analytics and Data Science Ulm (DASU), the new office in Ulm is an asset for the university and industry landscape in the region. As a member of the adesso Academic Committee, Reichert is familiar with the work and "philosophy" of the company, he notes: “There should be a close cooperation between academia and practical application in the current environment, in order to meet the challenges of the digital world. adesso is creating proximity to our higher education landscape and to the Science Park Ulm, too, with its new office in Ulm. Our students and graduates will benefit from a local employer that has made a name for itself as an innovator and driving force for the IT sector and exhibited extraordinary development over its 25-year history,” he said.

adesso will be offering its full range of services at the Ulm office, encompassing software development, IT operations and consulting services across fifteen different sectors. adesso Ulm will, together with all other adesso offices, benefit from its inclusion in the adesso Group’s high-performance, Europe-wide network, now comprising approximately 60 international locations.

The adesso Academic Committee – an interface between research and practical application

adesso works with a range of professors of information technology on the committee to co-develop and test the latest technologies and software engineering approaches and transfer them into practical application. New Ulm Site Manager Kolja Tönges said, “We are very much looking forward to working closely in Ulm with our Academic Committee member Professor Reichert from Ulm University.”

adesso already has similar partnerships at its locations in Kiel (Prof. Dr Wilhelm Hasselbring, University of Kiel), Stralsund (Prof. Dr Michael Klotz, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences), Berlin (Prof. Dr Stefan Tai, TU Berlin), Leipzig (Prof. Dr Norbert Siegmund, University of Leipzig), Aachen (Prof. Dr Bernhard Rumpe, RWTH Aachen University), Hanover (Prof. Dr Kurt Schneider, Leibniz University Hannover) and the head office in Dortmund (Prof. Dr Jens Teubner, TU Dortmund).
