Lean meets Digital: adesso provides impetus for the production of the future

The comprehensive use of data, the digitalisation of processes and AI-based assistance systems are paving the way for lean, integrated production systems – a basic prerequisite for increasing productivity and competitiveness.

The industry working group “Holistic Production Systems 4.0”

of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA deals with the question of how lean management can be further developed with digital solutions. adesso, one of the leading IT service providers in Germany, is forming the third working group in the first half of 2025 together with the industrial companies Siemens and Liebherr as well as the Fraunhofer IPA. Seven workshops are planned. From January to July 2025, managers from manufacturing companies will gain insights into Fraunhofer IPA’s applied research and the partners’ digitalisation solutions, develop ideas for practical implementation on this basis and share their own best practices and experiences.

Lean Production 4.0: digital and focussed on people

A key objective of the industry working group is to analyse the design of future-proof production systems based on the “Lean 4.0” toolbox developed by Fraunhofer IPA. It offers companies hundreds of solution modules in the field of digital tools and methods with which they can design operational production systems for the future and manage them in line with the times.

Other key questions that the working group would like to address include: what role will people play in digitalised, integrated production systems in the future? And what role do human-centred assistance systems play in this? adesso will provide some of the answers in its workshop on 11 February 2025 on the topic of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). The IT service provider will not only present innovative approaches with practical examples from implementation projects, but will also report first-hand on its experience in implementing new methods based on GenAI.

“Networking, systematic data management and the use of artificial intelligence are dramatically changing the shop floor. The opportunities to use these technologies to further streamline processes in integrated production systems and increase productivity are enormous,” says Dr Patrick Kübler, Head of Competence Center Digital Production. “We are looking forward to exchanging ideas with the experts from Fraunhofer IPA and the participating industry representatives. The working group will provide important impetus that will advance the digitalisation and competitiveness of Germany as an industrial location.”
