AI agents promise a new, better working world – but is it justified?

AI agents are the latest beacons of hope in the digital world. They are intended to replace previous “dumb” chatbots and assistants – and this is often urgently needed. We’ve all experienced the frustration of asking a supposedly “intelligent” customer service bot the same question three times, only to be left waiting on hold for a call centre representative. Market researchers worldwide are optimistic about the future of the new generation of AI tools – from personal assistants that organise calendars more efficiently than we can, to strategists that craft business plans while we’re still sipping our morning coffee. But what exactly is behind AI agents? And can they fulfil the hopes placed in them?

According to market researchers at Gartner, these advanced AI systems operate with minimal or even no human intervention. They are able to understand their environment, make decisions and carry out tasks independently. They are thus evolving from simple tools to active participants in the game. And this difference is quite striking: because with the advance of relational computing, as the Institute for the Future calls it, we will experience a paradigm shift. While technical solutions previously required more or less technically skilled users, this will no longer be the case in future thanks to technologies such as AI agents. This is undoubtedly a major step forward: AI agents will change the world of work and everyday life – how exactly remains to be seen.
