Chronic inflammatory skin conditions lower the quality of life of those affected and of their loved ones. Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is one of the most common chronic conditions in children and can persist into adulthood. The number and frequency of cases has increased significantly in recent decades, with roughly 10 to 15 % of children and 2.5 to 3.5 % of adults affected. The Berlin-based digital health start-up Nia Health develops digital chronic disease management solutions for skin conditions like these and supports patients throughout the treatment process. A spin-off of the university hospital Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the company develops, markets and manages leading dermatology apps. One of them is Nia, the most frequently downloaded app for people with atopic dermatitis.
To assist it in its mission, the rapidly growing company leverages modern technologies such as machine vision and natural language processing. The start-up’s main area of expertise is real-world evidence, which involves using anonymised medical information from patients’ everyday lives to help achieve major improvements in healthcare.
adesso ventures sees tremendous potential in the digital healthcare sector. Together with the lead investor, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), as well as Ventura BioMed Investors and other backers, adesso ventures is providing Nia Health with a total of EUR 3.5 million in funding. The fresh capital will be used to enhance products and finance international market expansion.
