adesso and Fraunhofer IPA stepping up digitalisation in the manufacturing industry

adesso has partnered up with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA to develop a brand-new methodology for designing and building industrial IoT (IIoT) platforms. The partnership cements the IT service provider’s position as a leading digitalisation partner for industrial companies capable of supporting digitalisation in manufacturing with data-driven optimisation along the entire value chain.

adesso offers end-to-end solutions tailored to the industry in its Manufacturing Industry business area, which recently saw the addition of IoT specialist com2m. Now adesso has started working together with the Fraunhofer IPA to develop a new approach to analysing IIoT requirements and designing and building IIoT platforms to bring these solutions even more closely in line with companies’ needs. IIoT platforms are becoming an increasingly important element in manufacturing, as they act as a central hub for all plant machinery and sensor data and can be used for evaluation and optimisation purposes. Numerous studies indicate that half of all industrial companies will be using IIoT platforms by the year 2025.

adesso and the Fraunhofer IPA have linked up with key players in manufacturing, IT and OT specialists and site and plant managers to determine which technologies should be used and whether a framework-based approach or specific platform configurations are the better way to meet requirements. This interdisciplinary strategy ensures that the chosen technologies are purpose-built for the use cases and level of maturity of the specific manufacturing environment and meet the client’s organisation and strategic requirements.

“Conventional optimisation potential has long since been exhausted at most industrial companies, meaning that further enhancements can only be achieved by taking a data-driven route,” explains Dr Martin Peters, expert in IoT business at adesso. “IIoT platforms are the basis for these solutions, combining data from a variety of different sources and ensuring an unbroken flow of information in manufacturing. On the downside, IIoT projects are complex and require a great deal of knowledge and experience, and more often than not also a large slice of creativity, too, as tapping in to the data generated by older machinery is no simple task. Industrial companies are therefore well-advised to seek expert partners who have experience in implementing a wide variety of use cases and know exactly what works and what doesn’t.”

adesso and Fraunhofer IPA are working hand in hand in this area, demonstrating exactly the kind of manufacturing expertise that is needed. In one project for a global player based in Germany, they are designing an entire smart factory for the production of battery storage devices With the new plant still in development, adesso and Fraunhofer IPA are following a simultaneous engineering approach in which all planning and development processes are closely coordinated. adesso and Fraunhofer IPA are helping their client choose a site, decide on the plant layout, plan manufacturing machinery, define processes and design ERP and MES systems. The project partners have also developed the concept for a custom IIoT platform.

adesso and Fraunhofer IPA intend to continue their partnership in future industrial projects too, with adesso bringing its comprehensive industry knowledge and wealth of experience with modern IT and IoT technologies. The IT service provider can provide end-to-end consulting, develop bespoke platforms and applications and even operate the new solutions on behalf of clients if necessary. The solutions can be used to digitally control and monitor highly complex manufacturing processes or provide predictive maintenance for machinery and systems.

adesso and Fraunhofer IPA have summarised their knowledge and experience, particularly in the construction of IIoT platforms, in a white paper entitled “IIoT-Plattformen als zentrale Datenbasis für die digitale Produktion. Einführung, Einsatz und Nutzen” (IIoT platforms as a central database for digital production: introduction, operation and benefits). It is available as a free download at the following link:
