Generative AI

The essentials at a glance

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI revolutionises our interaction with technology by creating new content. It is a sub-area of artificial intelligence. Known through applications such as ChatGPT or Midjourney, it generates texts, images, videos and more based on previous user input known as prompts. With the help of complex models, large amounts of unstructured data can be processed and controlled by speech and other human interaction. Due to its great potential, this technology is currently developing very quickly.

Why is Generative AI so adaptable?

Thanks to pre-trained models that are fed with large amounts of data, Generative AI can be quickly and efficiently adapted to new tasks. This accelerates its use in various areas, as basic development phases are no longer necessary. Special challenges that are not covered by the basic models can also be solved, but only with the appropriate expertise and time.

What are the differences between AI and Generative AI?

AI attempts to mimic or simulate aspects of human thinking in order to solve complex problems. While traditional AI systems are often developed for specific tasks such as pattern recognition, decision making or data analysis, Generative AI focuses on the creation and synthesis of new content. This specialised form of AI uses sophisticated, pre-trained models to generate original text, images, music, code or other media formats from large data sets.

Generative AI goes beyond simple pattern recognition or decision making by producing creative and innovative content based on patterns, predictions and learnt data structures. In contrast to traditional AI systems, which are usually used for clearly defined and narrowly defined tasks, Generative AI is characterised by its flexibility and versatility in content creation. It is able to generate new, coherent and often surprising content from the information available to it. However, it is important to emphasise that the ability of Generative AI to improve through experience depends on the continuous adaptation and optimisation of models by human developers. It cannot develop independently. Overall, Generative AI is a fascinating and rapidly evolving facet of Artificial Intelligence that opens up new possibilities in digital creativity and beyond.

How is Generative AI trained?

Large language models covering a wide range of topics are trained with relevant information from the internet. This makes it possible to react flexibly to a large number of queries and to refine the model with each new query. A particular challenge is the cleansing of the data in order to avoid errors and distortions. This effort must be made, which is why the use of pre-trained models offers many advantages.

What practical applications of generative AI already exist today?

Applications based on generative AI are already being used in many areas. They help to increase efficiency and reduce costs. In word processing, for example, it enables long documents to be summarised automatically, which saves time and makes it easier to absorb information. In software development, generative AI can support programmers with code suggestions or troubleshooting, thereby speeding up the development process. In creative media production, e.g. in the creation of images and videos, generative AI enables the fast and cost-effective production of high-quality, customised content.

These applications are just a few examples of the diverse possibilities of Generative AI. It has the potential to transform numerous industries by supporting human creativity and providing automated solutions for complex tasks.
