What can and does the public sector need to do to ensure that our actions on a societal level are as sustainable and consume as few resources as possible in the future? The aim of the current German government is to make sustainability strategies, goals and programmes binding through specific government policies and laws. Promoting this plan and playing an active role in making it happen are two of the key tasks facing the public sector in the coming years and decades.
More specifically, this involves the following questions and challenges, among others:
- What strategies and measures can be employed to make the ever-expanding role played by digitalisation as sustainable as possible?
- How can IT systems maximise performance while also conserving resources?
- What is the best way to support urban centres and municipalities on their way to becoming a smart city or smart region?
- What measures can be taken to optimally achieve the organisational changes necessary to make the public sector more sustainable?
- What strategies and measures can the public sector adopt to overcome current and future environmental issues (droughts, forest fires, floods, etc.)?
