Mobile Retter goes international: adesso establishes its Mobile Retter first-responder system in Spain

adesso has reached an agreement for the deployment of its Mobile Retter first-responder communication system in Spain. In a public tender process, The Ministry of Health of the Catalonia region, with Barcelona as its capital, chose the first-responder infrastructure from adesso. From December, the IT system will alert first responders to medical emergencies in the region, which has 7.5 million inhabitants.

adesso SE’s Mobile Retter system is helping improve the emergency rescue system in Germany. The technical infrastructure consists of the Mobile Retter platform for rescue dispatch centres, and the smartphone app of the same name for registered medical first responders. The application is provided and operated by adesso and its subsidiary medgineering GmbH.

Now the Emergency Medical System (Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques – SEM) of the Ministry of Health of Catalonia has contracted adesso to implement the system in the Catalan community. The system, which has been in use in Germany since 2013, won over the Catalan authorities in a public tender process. A total of 23 municipalities use the system in Germany. More than 18,000 volunteers are registered as first responders, and have counted more than 8,200 deployments. The fully autonomous system complements the existing rescue process: in case of a medical emergency the system locates registered, medically trained first aiders nearby and guides them to the scene using a smartphone app. That allows the first responder to administer first aid to the patient in an average of four minutes, while a notified ambulance in Germany takes an average of nine minutes to arrive at the scene of the emergency. That is dangerously long in the case of a cardiac arrest, where every second counts.

The introduction of the system in Spain is a pleasant affirmation for the Mobile Retter team. Markus Lünsmann, Managing Director of medgineering GmbH, comments: “The use of our system in Catalonia makes it an international solution, which can contact all first responders, regardless of the country they are in. We are very pleased that our concept for additional emergency assistance will immediately start helping save lives in Catalonia.”

Miriam Lindhorst, Managing Director at adesso Spain, is also happy about the recognition and attention the contract with the Catalan Ministry of Health is generating for the branch in Barcelona: “The trust placed in us by the Ministry of Health with the conclusion of the contract for this important task shows that we are on the right path. The project is based on state-of-the-art AI and cloud computing technology. That will help us increase our visibility and recognition, allowing us to attract new staff and expand our business as planned.”

Because Catalonia, and its capital city Barcelona, are a popular destination for tourists, Mobile Retter’s registered first responders will be informed of the expansion of their remit to include north-eastern Spain. That means first responders registered in Germany will be able to activate themselves for emergencies in Spain, for example if they are on holiday there.

A number of regions in Germany have also been networked, allowing the single system to send truly cross-border alerts.
