Redesign of the Personnel Assignment System PES
In the context of the project Redesign PES the existing PES system had to be replaced by an assignment system for personnel based on state-of-the-art technologies. The main functionalities of the system are the assignment of personnel, the calculation of working times and bonus, the organisation of absences and the settlement of internal costs and services.

adesso Schweiz AG took over the analysis, specification and realisation of the application and designed the interfaces to surrounding systems as well as the data migration. The realisation and implementation of the project took place in close cooperation with IT Post.
The customer’s aim was to replace the legacy system on short notice by a completely new solution without losing any functionalities of the old system. The replacement for PES had to be an efficient, economic, integrative and easy to use system for all business units. At all operating sites, including receiving offices and post sorting centres, the assignment of personnel had to be planned and the working time control had to be ensured.
In a next step, the existing system PES had been analyzed, in particular the interfaces to external systems as for example SAP. Based on this knowledge the requirements for the new system PES were defined and documented in close collaboration with the post’s experts. Moreover, the prototype of the new user interface was defined. In addition to the requirements definition, adesso was assigned to provide a logical data base model as well as a concept for data migration. Simultaneously, a technical concept for the architecture was designed. By means of an integrated prototype, the concept was tested continuously.
The solution PES consists of three layers. The database layer consists of the Oracle DBMS. Above this level the business logic level follows which is embedded in the JEE server of WebLogic. The presentation layer beyond this is divided into a Rich-Client and a Web-Client. The Web-Client is realised with Struts and also embedded in the JEE server. The Rich-Client uses parts of the component framework ActiveFrame®. By applying the adesso framework structure ActiveFrame® and by using standard software components, the system is always ready for future developments.
A ready-for-production version had been designed in only nine months. The iterative process model choosen allowed to react flexibly to changes in requirements and to include customer needs. A main part of the implementation phase was the transmission of the hitherto decentralized data stocks into a centralized Oracle database. With the new data model, the Swiss post was able to reduce its operation costs due to the centralized administration, the maintenance and the protection of the data stock. The new PES has been installed on more than 4.500 clients in Switzerland.
